It is very easy to visit Vientiane, even for a day.
Closed off to the outside world until , Laos now opens up as the last piece of the puzzle for any SE Asia itinerary, surprising visitors with its sheer scale of untouched wilderness. Oft overlooked in favour of the flanking nations of Vietnam and Thailand, Laos benefits from relatively few tourists to maintain a certain rustic magic. Compensating for its lack of coast with endless rugged green landscapes, the never-ending countryside lies undeveloped except for rolling rice paddies and rural farms, best explored on a motorbike trip passing through humble working villages and French eco-retreats along the way. Our itinerary starts in the wealthy northern capital of Luang Prabang, pausing at hidden waterfalls, caves and river settlements en route to a series of thousands of tiny islands right on the Mekong.

This lively spot features an outdoor terrace for those who enjoy open-air mingling, a cozy downstairs bar, and an upstairs stage that comes alive on weekends with entertaining cabaret shows. The bar offers a broad selection of drinks, with happy hour specials from 7 pm to 9 pm, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. Patrons often praise the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, noting the mix of locals and foreigners that contribute to its inclusive vibe.
In Laos' laid-back capital, you'll find a society where acceptance comes with a subtle nod rather than a rainbow parade. Vientiane's charm lies not in its flashy gay scene, but in its genuine, judgment-free embrace of all travelers. We spent about a week in Vientiane in on a several week laos trip trying to get to know as many locals and expats living in the city as possible. While the scene is very small, and a bit hush-hush, it does exist.
