Ao contrário da situação em muitos países caribenhos, a homossexualidade não é ilegal no Suriname e episódios de violência contra gays são raros. Porém, contrastando com o número crescente dos países sul americanos, no Suriname o casamento ou união civil entre pessoas do mesmo sexo ainda são proibidos. A elite política surinamesa parece relutante em debater temas que mudem o status quo. Dentre os maiores empregadores, apenas a estatal petroleira Staatsolie reconhece a união entre pessoas do mesmo sexo em seus programas de benefícios trabalhistas.

Homosexuality is derived from the Greek word 'homos' meaning the same and the Latin word "sexus" sex. Homosexuality is a Western term for people with a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex. A man who prefers sex with another man is called homo or gay. A woman, who prefers sex with another woman, is called a lesbian.

Unlike the situation in many Caribbean countries, homosexuality is not illegal in Suriname, and violence against gay people is rare. But unlike a growing number of South American countries, it is not possible for gays in Suriname to marry or register as a couple, with all the legal benefits such as not getting banned from hospital visits and funerals of partners, being able to utilize partners social security and pension benefits. It is possible to live as an openly gay person in Suriname, but in many Surinamese communities the topic is still a taboo. That puts high barriers on coming out for some Surinamese.
